Intercon has extended its range of purging equipment to include a unique product. This is a non metalic weld backing system for the backing of welds, where purging is required but not easily achieved.

Benefits
When welding thin wall stainless steel sheet and vessels fiom one side only, the backing tape can be attached to the backside of the weld improving weld bead profiles. This supports the weld pool and keeps argon from the weld torch surrounding the weld pool. This eliminates the need to back purge, while giving a consistent high quality under-bead profile. For purging large vessels the tremendous savings of purge gas and down time, makes this product economical and indispensable.
The high temperature heat resistant adhesive aluminum backing foil is available in either a 2" x 40' with a heat resistant band of woven glass fiber cloth 3/4" wide. Or for heavy~duty applications we have a 4" x 40' aluminum tape with glass fiber cloth width of 2".
The thickness of the cloth will support single pass TIG welding at weld currents up to 130 Amps (2") and 250 Amps (4"), without change to the chemistry or metallurgy of the weld.
